Sonny McLean's Irish Pub: Where sporty New Englanders reunite

Jul 16, 2010

Located on Wilshire and between Princeton and 26th Street, this Irish pub has plenty of cold beer on tap and flat screen TVs lining the walls. The decor is dark, classy and comfortable, with loads of natural light streaming in from the front windows. Patrons can sit in the high-backed green booths lining the walls, at high-top tables in the middle of the room or at the long, dark wood bar.

During recent World Cup games, the bar gets quite full, as it does during playoff seasons for other sports. Whether you want to catch the World Series, the Final Four or just a regular game, chances are Sonny McLean’s is showing it. The pub prides itself on being a Boston sports headquarters, so relocated East-coasters will find solace and camaraderie here. Boston sports trump all other games, but there are plenty of televisions to catch the game you’re jonesing to see.

Karaoke fans will enjoy three nights a week of amateur singing at Sonny’s. Croon your favorite tunes between beers on Sunday and Wednesday starting at 9:30 p.m. and Saturday starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday is team trivia night, starting at 8 p.m. -- call ahead to reserve a spot for your  team to compete. Check out the Sonny’s calendar for other in-bar happenings.

Although the menu features typical greasy yet delicious bar food selections like buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks, potato skins, chili cheese fries, stuffed jalapeño poppers, onion rings and nachos, there are also many soups and salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood, pizzas and regular entrees from which to choose. The burgers are juicy half-pounders with some interesting themes. The Tatupo burger is topped with pineapple, ham and mozzarella; the Texas Con Man has cole slaw, BBQ sauce, jack cheese and onion rings; the Mexican burger is made with jalapeños, sour cream, olives, guacamole and chips; and the Irish burger is topped with sliced corned beef, mashed potatoes and gravy.

As far as hydration goes, patrons can order bottles, pints or pitchers. Choose from Blue Moon, Fat Tire, Guinness, Redhook, Stella Artois, Hoegarden, Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams, Smithwicks, Bud, Coors Light, Miller Light, Newcastle and Drifter Pale Ale, just to name a few. Sonny’s also has cider, red wine, white wine and several malt liquor beverages to complete your Red Sox game of choice.

HelloMetro Tip: During baseball season, especially when the Sox are playing, get here early and score a fantastic seat.
