Kay 'n Dave's Cantina: Experts at chips and salsa

Jul 4, 2010

Across the street from the Brentwood Country Market on 26th Street, Kay ‘n Dave’s Cantina is a popular spot for lunch and dinner above Montana. The inside is decked out with colorful masks and bright paintings. The floor is rustic and the tables and chairs are made from sturdy, light-colored wood.

It can get pretty busy in here for lunchtime, and the parallel walls prove a noisy lunch hour, especially when lots of children are dining in as well. If you don’t mind the noise, stop in and try the chips and salsa. The salsa is delicious, with pureed tomatoes, fresh cilantro, chopped onions and a yummy blend of spices.

For lunch patrons can order from the “Light Lunch” section, which is less expensive than the regular menu. Items include a burrito with soup or salad, a suissa enchilada with a salad, a swordfish taco and salad, a mini quesadilla with a soup or salad, and other combinations of tacos, salads, rice or beans.

Start off your meal off with ceviche, mini mole burritos, nachos, fresh guacamole or a zucchini and squash tamale. Soup and salad lovers have many options on the menu as well, including tortilla soup, mamacitas chicken soup, swordfish salad, taco salad, lime cilantro chicken salad, chopped salad an baby mixed greens. Entree items include burritos, tacos, chile relleno, mole chicken tacos, steak or chicken fajitas, lamb birria, orange tequila chicken, filet mignon burrito, and salmon and spinach enchiladas. The mango chutney sole is quite bland, so if you’re looking for a meal with more flavor, try the chicken mole tacos or the spicy black bean soup.

Kay ‘n Dave’s menu has a section dedicated to vegetarian fare. If you want no-meat, try the veggieladas (vegetarian enchiladas), the black bean tacos, the garden burrito with spinach, mushrooms, onions and tomatoes, or the fresh veggie plate. They also serve up burgers, a complete kids’ menu and Mexican breakfast if you’re not in the mood for tacos or burritos.

HelloMetro Tip: After some bites and beers at Kay ‘n Dave’s Cantina, hop across the street and check out the shops at the Brentwood Country Mart. You’ll find fine gifts, personalized stationary, books, clothing and more.
